The top ten…
Top Country Songs of 2010 – Part 5
10) American Honey – Lady Antebellum
Lady Antebellum started out 2010 with a bang. The song to kick off the year for the group was American Honey. The song featured co-lead singer Hillary Scott as the solo lead on the song. It’s about the growth of a girl into adulthood. It’s a sweet song with nostalgic lyrics as country fans got a bit of a look into perhaps the way Hillary grew up. The story must have connected with tons of country fans because it went to number one later in 2010 and became just another big hit for the group that’s taking over country music.
9) Free – Zac Brown Band
Zac Brown Band has slowly been taking over country music. The guys have a tight country sound with plenty of catchy melodies to go around. The guys released an almost unheard of fifth single from their last album when they released Free in 2010. The song instantly connected with fans ans went all the way to number one on the charts. The song’s simple lyrics about living free and loving life were simple enough that fans could turn it into something they each could relate to. It’s great to see such a simple yet great song become so big in the country world. ZBB is still rolling in late 2010 and looks to have no let up going into the new year.
8) A Little More Country Than That – Easton Corbin
Easton Corbin was a newcomer still in 2010. He had a single slowly climbing the charts and most people thought his debut song A Little More Country Than That was a George Strait song. Easton didn’t seem to mind. He took his debut single to the number one spot on the charts and people started recognizing his talents. It’s not bad to be compared to the greatest singer in country music history, but Easton is now known as one of the few artists to have a number one hit the first time out. The song is catchy, fun, and it’s got all the great country images that go with a classic country song. It got tons of play on radio in 2010 and surely belongs toward the top of this list.
7) Pretty Good at Drinkin’ Beer – Billy Currington
Billy Currington had a tough task after having huge success with is last album and singles. Billy didn’t miss a beat though when he released the single Pretty Good At Drinkin’ Beer. The song shot straight to the top of the country charts in 2010 and became yet another huge hit for Billy. The song is about a guy that’s kind of lazy yet can turn things on when it comes to drinking beer. Billy has a kind of laid back aura about him. He must work hard through because he keeps putting out great music. He makes it look easy and his fans are loving him right now as he keeps rolling through great country songs.
6) Southern Voice – Tim McGraw
It had been two and a half years since Tim McGraw had topped the country charts. Way back in January 2010 Tim topped the charts once again with the track Southern Voice. The track is simply a good melody tune that is fun to listen to and easy to enjoy. The song was part of the bit hit movie Blind Side, which Tim co-starred in with award winning Sanda Bullock. The song became as big as the movie and goes to show that Tim is still out there going hard to find the best songs he can and give them to his fans. Southern Voice continued getting lots of play all year and is truly one of the biggest songs of 2010.
5) My Kinda Party – Jason Aldean
Late in 2010 Jason Aldean readied his next album. The first single from the album was a rocking track originally written and recorded by Brantley Gilbert. The song is My Kinda Party and it’s the perfect fit for Aldean’s rocking brand of country. The song is about a guy heading out for a night on the country town. Rocking on a tailgate just a bit out of town with the good friends of the small town is as country as it gets. Add a few killer electric guitar licks and some vocal attitude and it makes for one of the best hits of the year. This was a great track and it shows that Jason’s career is going to keep on rolling for a while.
4) Lover, Lover – Jerrod Niemann
The surprised hit and artist of the year has to be Lover, Lover from Jerrod Niemann. In 2010 there were many surprises but when Lover, Lover hit the airwaves people were taking notice and thinking, “What is this song and who is singing?”. Jerrod Niemann took an old pop hit and turned it into one of the catchiest country songs of all time. The track is fun and upbeat. Even though the tune is about a guy leaving his girl, which is normally a sad situation this one turned positive as the guy recognizes he’s read for the next stage in his life. The song will likely be popular for years and years and Jerrod looks to keep his success going into next year.
3) Undo It – Carrie Underwood
Carrie Underwood channeled her inner rocker for her 2010 hit Undo It. The song is up in the face of country fans and melts some faces with attitude and plenty of rocking licks. The song has Carrie laying out some attitude on a former lover. She wishes she couldn’t simply undo the relationship that ended poorly. Nothing good came out of it and things were bad. Carrie would even say the song is a bit mean, but it sure made for a sassy and great country song. The tune of course topped the charts – most of Carrie’s singles do – and became a top song of 2010. There is no letting up in Carrie’s career right now. She’s rocking the country world.
2) Rain Is A Good Thing – Luke Bryan
Luke Bryan turned the idea of rain on its head in 2010. Rain Is A Good Thing pretty much says how Luke feels about getting wet and enjoying the normally crummy weather. Rain is usually something that can ruin a good summer day and night, but Luke – the son of a farmer – knows how important rain is for the growers and land workers of the world. Luke also knows that even when there is a bit of rain in there area there is still plenty of good times to have with friends and even your lover. The song topped the charts over the summer of 2010. Fans couldn’t get enough of the catchy melody and the fun lyrics. I can imagine a lot of country fans were enjoying those rainy summer nights this year.
1) The House That Built Me – Miranda Lambert
The song that has to top the list for 2010 is The House That Built Me from Miranda Lambert. It would be tough for any artist to follow up a strong album with another strong album but that’s exactly what Miranda was able to do with her recent album Revolution. The single that lead the way in 2010 was House and it became Miranda’s first number one hit on the charts. The song is about a woman going back to the house she grew up on to look at everything and remember all the events that happened over her life that helped form who she is now. Miranda didn’t write the song, but she certainly owned the emotion of the lyrics with her vocals. It’s a great song and I had to put it as the number one song of 2010.
