The song title Tar Top might not mean much to you, but it’s relevant for the new Blake Shelton single.
Tar Top was a single from Alabama back in 1987. It was the first single in several years that didn’t reach the #1 spot on the singles charts for the band. It’s a good song, but things are so fickle with radio that you just never know when a song will hit or miss. It reached #7 on the chart and ended Alabama’s record run, but they jumped right back to the top spot with the next six singles.
Before that song, Alabama had 21 straight top hits on the charts. That’s crazy.
For the last several years I’ve been kind of keeping tabs on Blake Shelton because he’s been on a run that was getting close to that record of 21 in a row. That streak ended at 17. The last single, She’s Got A Way With Words, was the one that broke the streak. And oddly enough it peaked at #7 on the chart just like Tar Top did back in 1987.
But the streak’s over now and it’s time to move on to the next one. And Blake has a good single lined up that sounds like a surefire top hit.
A Guy With A Girl – Blake Shelton
Back a year or so ago Blake put out Gonna. It was a fun, catchy single that was a big hit. Blake commented at the time that the song wasn’t meant to be anything crazy serious or anything like that. He said that not every song has to cure cancer or things like that. We just need fun songs once in awhile.
And that’s kind of the vibe I get from A Guy With A Girl. It’s catchy. It’s fun. It makes you smile and you’re going to be singing along with this one as we head into the next few months. I think it’ll get Blake back to the top of the charts.
