Album Review: Same Trailer Different Park

Same Trailer Different ParkIt’s interesting to look back on that other talent show from the last, Nashville Star, and realize the talent that came out of it.

First off, Blake Shelton was a judge on the show at one point. He went on to have huge success with The Voice and he’s now a big time superstar as a country artist.

Blake’s bride, Miranda Lambert, didn’t even win the show during her run yet ended up being one of the most successful singers to come from the show along with the likes of Chris Young and Buddy Jewell.

I was a huge fan of the show during its run and it was kind of a surprise to me to hear the name Kacey Musgraves pop up again in the country world a few years after her run on the show.

Kacey has been busy with her career for a long time. She’s released albums on her own for years. She’s been writing songs for other artists for years and she’s still only 24 years old.

Two years ago Kacey made a few waves in the country world with her duet with the Josh Abbott Band on Oh, Tonight. Great song and great video. The evidence is right there that Kacey is a star.

Last year Kacey released the song Merry Go ‘Round to radio. It was different. It was interesting. There wasn’t anything like it going on at the time and now here we are a few months later and the song is in the top ten on the charts.

All the work has led up to this album release.

It should only be the beginning of a great career for Kacey Musgraves.

Here are my track-by-track thoughts on each of the songs.

Same Trailer Different Park

Kacey looks at the world differently. She doesn’t fall into the usual trappings of life. She takes the usual and turns it around on its head and creates a new perspective. It’s a really interesting album that will keep you listening the entire time.

1. Silver Lining

Things get off to a somber note, but it’s still catchy. The melody on this corner is really good. It’s about finding that silver lining in life and realizing that it doesn’t come usually until after you’ve gone through some difficult times.

2. My House

The music on this one is a upbeat and fun. I do like the idea of having a house on four wheels. It’s a life we all kind of dream about, but we don’t really make it a reality and it seems like maybe our romance overshadows the lowlier aspects of life on the road.

3. Merry Go ‘Round

By now you have probably heard this song. It’s a huge smash hit with a different take on what life is like in the small town. I grew up in a small town. Actually I grew in the “country” outside of a small town. This song hits home.

4. Dandelion

This is another example of how Kacey isn’t afraid to do different things with her songs. The sound on this one is really unique. It’s not only different, but still interesting and catchy. You can sing along with it.

5. Blowin’ Smoke

This song seems to be one of the popular ones in the early collection of Kacey Musgraves. It’s certainly catchy and proof of how unafraid Kacey is when it comes to saying what she wants to say in her songs.

6. I Miss You

We all have those moments in life when we run into a person from our past. We don’t really know how to react and sometimes those old memories come up. Sometimes it’s good and sometimes it’s just…awkward. I think this is one of the good times.

7. Step Off

There is an attitude in this song and in a few of the songs Kacey writes and sings. It’s no wonder Miranda Lambert recorded one of Kacey’s songs and has turned it into a huge hit on the charts. People like attitude and Kacey seems to have it.

8. Back On The Map

I really like this song. It has a really cool sound. It almost sounds distant, which makes sense for this song. Sometimes we fall in life and we need to work our way back. Sometimes it’s not even up to us or it at least seems that way.

9. Keep It To Yourself

There seems to be a lot of relationship experience for Kacey. We’ve all had those people in our lives that kind of screw with our minds. We fall in and out of love with them. They can’t make up their mind and finally we have to tell them to shut up and keep their feelings to themselves because we can’t take the back and forth anymore.

10. Stupid

I love the lyrics throughout this album including the ones on this song. It’s really different from the rest on the album, but you can tell instantly it’s a Kacey Musgraves song. She has this way of bringing very visual lyrics to life. She’s not afraid to talk about anything. It’s great. She’s not vulgar (at least not on this record), but she seems to say what’s on her mind.

11. Follow Your Arrow

I don’t want to go through this album without saying what a great singer Kacey Musgraves is. It’s easy to focus on the songwriting and the music, but Kacey is a really good singer. This is an example of that. Lots of great melodies on this one. She does a great job with a great song.

12. It Is What It Is

The closer on the song uses a term I get very tired of hearing and I think Kacey seems the same way. It’s kind of a laid back song that really has influences from old school barroom country. This is my favorite song on the entire album.
