Today is Wednesday and that means it’s time for me to find a hidden gem of an album track. These are songs that you may not have discovered unless you purchased the album.
This week’s song is a little different. I actually didn’t realize there was a video for this song. So I guess it was kind of released, but it was never out at radio.
Whatever the circumstance, this is a great song that I’m sure speaks to a lot of people out there. Maybe you or someone you know.
An Old Friend Of Mine – Joe Nichols
Joe Nichols is one of the few traditionalists we have in country music today. Sometimes I think he would have been better off coming around in the ’80s or ’90s, but he could do well in any era and that’s why he’s still doing well today.
The intro to this song is very nice. You get insight into the struggles Joe has had in his own life with addiction. I don’t think it matters the substance or the activity, we can all become addicted to something. It seems that for some of us it can take hold worse than it does for others.
That’s what this song is about. It’s about letting go of those things that pull you away from a good life. When your family and friends and work start to suffer because of something less important then you’re in addiction territory.
Joe has been having hits now for 15 years. That’s a really long time. I would say that perseverance is a good word to describe Joe Nichols and it fits well with this song.
Great job Joe!
