The key to The Band Perry lies in the unique voice of lead singer Kimberly.
She has a voice with a certain attitude. It reminds me a bit of Natalie Maines from the Dixie Chicks. There is a chip on the shoulder attitude in Kimberly’s voice and it somehow works in the songs the band has released.
For the band’s latest single they chose the cheating song You Lie and it sounds like another winner from the recent chart topping group.
The song is about a cheating boyfriend. The narrator knows he’s cheating even while he lies about his affairs. She compares his lying to being so blatant and obvious that it’s natural for him like how a rug lies on the floor, a dog lies on the porch, and a penny lies on the parking lot ground.
The topic of the song is not uncommon, but what sets this song apart is the sound. Kim’s voice reaches a point of almost being over the top while staying just on the edge of cool and different.
I’m a big believer that success happens on the edges. The Band Perry is on the edge of country music. They have their own sound with Kim’s voice being the star of the group.
I think You Liesounds like a top ten hit for the group. It may take awhile for this one to climb the charts, but I think it will help the band continue to grow their fanbase on their hopes of becoming stars.
