Artists sometimes start out as songwriters in Nashville before they get their break as singers.
That seems to be the path for Brandy Clark. She’s been putting in the work as a songwriter for years. She’s had big names record her songs and she’s finally finding some success on the charts with the recent single Mama’s Broken Heart, which is racing up the charts for Miranda Lambert.
To capitalize on the recent success Brandy has finished up a new album.
Brandy is funny. She seems prepared for life as an artist.
It could be her time.
What Will Keep Me Out of Heaven by Brandy Clark
You’ll notice some really interesting titles on this set list. There are songs about pills and illegitimate children. If you take this album from face value you would think that it’s pretty dark.
But it’s good to take a closer look at the songs. You’ll get to know a little bit about this new artist, Brandy Clark.
1. Pray to Jesus
If you like the independent feel in country music you’ll like this song and the entire album. Brandy is very stripped down with just a guitar and her voice. There are other instruments here, but it has a sound that really focuses on the stories in the lyrics. It’s an approach that works well throughout this record.
2. Crazy Women
You’ve heard this one before if you listen to LeAnn Rimes. Well, it was a single for LeAnn, but it wasn’t a huge single. It’s a great song and Brandy does a great job on it.
3. What Will Keep Me Out of Heaven
This is a song that kind of stands out from the rest. It has the feel of a ballad, which is quite different from the others on the record. This song is about a woman and a man that are making what is probably a poor decision. That’s kind of a running theme on the entire album.
4. Get High
Get High? Yeah, you’ll never hear a song with that title on country radio in our lifetimes. It’s too bad because this is a really great song. There is no doubt that Brandy is honest with her life and the things she sees.
5. Hold My Hand
A cover of the Hootie & The Blowfish classic? Nope. That would have been neat, though. This is a good song on its own. It’s about life’s complications, which are usually the topics that make for the best country songs.
6. Stripes
The narrator in this song is looking at wearing stripes if she makes a decision. A really cool song with an interesting sound.
7. In Some Corner
Drinking is a big theme on this album. It’s obviously been a part of Brandy’s life. It’s affected her in more than the usual ways. Some use it to deal with life, which is what this song is about. Some of us just can’t stay away from certain people even if they’re all wrong for us.
8. Take A Little Pill
There are a lot of songs on this album that deal with how our actions affect others, especially children. People today use pills to try to take care of issues, but pills only solve the symptoms. They never deal with the real issues.
9. Hungover
Brandy is really great at avoiding the usual lyrics. She’s writing about some of the secrets that are right out in the open. This song is about how a woman deals with her husband or lover that’s always hungover. While he’s sleeping it off she’s busy taking are of business.
10. Illegitimate Children
This is a real country song. There is twang in Brandy’s voice. This song is about the meeting of two people that end of having a little too much fun tonight. It’s a look at what can happen when you aren’t thinking straight.
11. The Day She Got Divorced
The great thing about Brandy is there is plenty of real life in her lyrics. She’s not afraid to write about the things that happen all the time that are also the things people don’t like to write music about. This one is about a woman that’s ready for a change on the day she gets divorced.
12. Just Like Him
This song is about a man that can’t really keep things under control. It’s about how that affects the people he’s closest too. I think it’s about a father, but it could be about any guy that is so off the rails that he doesn’t even realize how it’s impacting his family and friends.
