New Hometown Connor Christian and Southern Gothic

A great mix of music from Connor Christian & Southern Gothic

There are some really good artists out there making great music on the edges of country music.

Connor Christian & Southern Gothic are on that list. They’re something really unique and special and I hope you check them out. Their first single is doing really well it seems. Lots of people are listening to it already and the video premieres this week on CMT. I think it could catch fire.

I’ve had the chance to listen to their entire album and it’s every bit as good as the first single.

There’s a little bit of Zac Brown Band in there. You’ll also hear a little feel of the ’70s songwriters era. At the core it’s good music about life and that’s what it’s all about.

Album Review: New Hometown – Connor Christian

I did a double take when I realized the album has 18 songs. You just don’t see that ever in the history of country music. It’s awesome because you feel like you’re really getting a treat. That’s two albums for most artists, but CCSG apparently wants to bring the full house.

This is a good album. You get a feel for what these guys are all about. There are stories here. There is feeling in the music. It’s really good stuff.

1. Sheets Down

The opening track is also the first single. It was the first song I heard from these guys. They’re different and this song is really good. It’s catchy and has a few great hooks. I like it. The great thing is that it was only an introduction to a great mix of tracks.

2. 16 Bars

The pace doesn’t really slow down at all. It’s kind of a medium pace from the opening and it blends well into this song. A song about love and life and how that all goes. It’s a hard way to get to where we want to go.

3. Only Need You

Here is one that slows down a little bit. You could call it the love ballad on the album. It’s a story about love and how sometimes all you need is each other.

4. That Ol’ Jukebox

This one is pretty cool. It’s funky and fun. I like it.

5. Stella Please

This one is a little different than you normally get in country music. There is emotion here and it runs throughout the album. It’s a great aspect of the music here.

6. Hang My Head

Connor likes to get to the point on a few of these songs. It’s a great aspect. He grabs your attention with his voice without overdoing it.

7. The Light

I like this one. Great melody.

8. Bound For Glory

Here is perhaps the most different song on the entire album. You’ll just have to get the record and listen for yourself.

9. November Rain

I was really hoping this was the Guns N’ Roses song. They pull it off. It’s amazing. I’m a secret…well that’s not true. I’m a huge GNR fan and a lot of people know it.

10. Fiddler

Are you ready for a fiddlin’ song? Just give this a listen. You’ll know.

11. When I’m Gone

Whoa. This one caught me off guard. All you hear is the big thumping of the drums when this song kicks in. You actually kind of feel it. Interesting song. It’s different and I like it.

12. (She’s) My Salvation

There have to be a few love songs on an album that has 18 songs. Here is one. It’s pretty good.

13. New Hometown

The title track is something different. The South is strong in this album. The life of a country singer trying to make it is here in this track.

14. Back In Dixie

We’re going home with this track. It’s always interesting to hear songs like this. They’re not about your hometown, but you put yourself in your own story about going home. It’s great.

15. Hotel Bar

Here’s one of the rockers on the album. Connor Christian certainly has a rock voice. He’ll do well in country music, but it’s nice to hear some of that rock and roll too.

16. Our Song

The songs like this on the album are the best. It’s just my feeling, but I really think this is the laid back vibe that people will really like. It’s a simple melody about love and life. That’s what makes things interesting. It doesn’t always have to be deep and complex.

17. South Texas Sun

This one has a little bit of the blues in it. There is no doubt the South is running wild in the veins of this music. Great song here.

18. Watch Me Run

The album ends on a positive note. The song is fast and rolling. There is a lot of emotion in this entire album. There is love and lost. Here we have a guy that has to let go of the past and move on with his life. I think it’s about a guy who’s former lover comes back into his life, but he needs to move on and find something better or at least give it a chance.

I first saw Connor Christian while vacationing in Isle of Palms, SC. two years ago and have been a fan ever since. They were playing on the deck at Windjammer. Their music pulls you in and and doesn’t let go. Connor’s voice is so distinct and unique. The band members are amzing as well. Such a great blend of talent. I haven’t felt this passionate about an artist since I followed Bob Seger as a teenager in the 70’s. I’ve seen them live now four times and it’s been a blast. Their shows appeal to college age kids to old folks like me. And, they are as gracious as they are talented. They love their fans and treat them as friends. If you get an opportunity to see them live you’re in for a real treat!

A brilliant group of folks who’s music resonates in a way that most of their contemporaries would kill to be able to pull off on one or two songs, much less the vast majority of their output. Lyrically, sublime. Musically, cohesion to the point of hypnotic. You actually become part of the songs. Looking forward to seeing them soon. You’re hard pressed to find a better live band touring today.
    Thank you CCSG.
