This could be the one.
What Lindsay Ell is bringing to country music is pretty unique. It reminds me of my college days when there were a lot of guitar acts in the pop and rock world. John Mayer was kind of the leader at the time. Probably the biggest of that singer-songwriter-guitar player group. But there were plenty of others.
And it was all good.
It’s been a few years for Lindsay Ell. Several years releasing music and probably many more before that honing her craft. She hasn’t been able to break into the US mainstream, but things appear right on the cusp.
Here is her latest single, which is already getting some great reception at radio.
Criminal – Lindsay Ell
This song just oozes cool. The guitar is laid on thick and you really don’t get that in country music. Maybe a little with Brad Paisley. And Jason Aldean is never afraid to shy away from those rock guitars.
But this is something different from Lindsay. There’s a little Sam Hunt in the sound. A little Kip Moore. And I think it really works for her. It sounds like her. And that’s a big thing. I think she’s really making the music she loves now and this song could be her first hit. I hope it is.
The lyrics are that of a love song. A woman looking at the guy she’s with and feeling almost like she’s getting away with something because of how good things are going with the guy. Maybe she’s been hurt in the past. Things haven’t worked out and now she’s not sure that she deserves this kind of feeling.
Great song.
