Crystal Bowersox is back with a new single.
The American Idol alum has released a few singles since being on the show. She’s reached the outskirts of the charts and has always had a knack for writing really powerful songs. This new one is another song like that with a new twist on things.
Give it a listen and see if you can relate.
Dead Weight – Crystal Bowersox
Listen to Dead Weight by Crystal Bowersox
From what I can tell this song is about the old advice that you shouldn’t beat a dead horse. I’ve heard it said a few different ways including paying for a dead horse as it is when you buy a car on credit and crash it before it’s paid off.
The topic of the song seems to be about how people tend to hold onto someone even though that person has left their life. Usually the case is after a breakup. You kind of hang on to things instead of just moving on and letting go.
It’s dead weight and it can really hold you back and bring you down.
That’s the sad pat of this song. It’s a struggle with former love.
But there is also hope in this song. It’s about understanding the dead weight and finally moving on.
This song has a really good melody with some good hooks. You can sing along by the end of the song, which always helps when you’re looking for mainstream success.
I love the background vocals on the song too.
Great song here.
What do you think?

#35 on what chart? Do you think Radio will play this? I love it, but indy label…Radio didn’t play her first album, Do you think they are going to this time?
Probably more of an optimistic guess. I hope radio picks it up, but doubtful. The good thing for artists like Crystal is the Billboard Hot Country Songs is now based on sales. The radio airplay chart is separate.
I think the label is marketing her as Alt_Country, at least thats how she’s listed for SXSW, so they will probably push AAA radio…I’m hoping its released to country too…Jive only released farmers daughter to AAA and HAC even though it was a success on CMT…They were going through the motions, they knew sony was parting ways with idol and any idol acts that hadn’t already made them money.
This song, though I was slow to find out about it, is just an incredible testimonial to the power of spirit to overcome and her lovely voice is the vehicle by which we can do so.
