Last year Chrystal Bowersox entered the big stage of American Idol and made it all the way to the runner up position.
After the show was over Crystal got busy preparing her debut album. Crystal had different ideas for her first single and album release compared to previous Idol stars like Carrie Underwood. Crystal knew she had to set the tone for her career with a personal song about tragedy and sorrow.
Farmer’s Daughter is a song about an abusive relationship between a daughter and her mother. Booze, beatings, and disappointment fill the emotion in the song. Crystal’s emotions bleed out in every vocal line. The truth is not hidden behind anything here. It’s all authentic and real.
Farmer’s Daughter is certainly not the kind of song label’s and artists typically release to gain attention. More often than not something snappy and upbeat is released as a way to slowly introduce an artist. That isn’t the case for Crystal Bowersox and it’s working to her advantage.
If I remember correctly I think the last time a song like this came out from a new artist was Alyssa Lies from Jason Michael Carroll.
Farmer’s Daughter has been getting heavy play on new radio stations and the video is getting spun on CMT in heavy rotation. CMT’s website has listed the video as the top played for several days and probably weeks.
It will be interesting to see the direction Crystal Bowersox’s career takes from her. She’s certainly made an impact with her first single. She seems fearless in her pursuit of making music for a certain group of fans. And I applaud her for that.
