Let me know how you interpret this one.
This is one that really was interesting to me. Jay Matthes is from Wisconsin, which is where I’m from. There’s a great music scene in Wisconsin. We have a history in various genres. Everything from rock to country and in between.
Jay falls into the new Americana area I think. And that obviously has some similarities with country and folk.
He has a new album that came out recently. We’re going to look at one of the songs that’s been getting attention.
Dancing After Dark – Jay Matthes
I think this is a song about love and life. It seems to be somewhat autobiographical. I think it’s Jay looking back at life about how things kind of get a little different after dark.
I think one element is putting a child to bed and then the parents taking a little time to themselves. The child goes off to dream while the parents have a glass of wine together. They listen to music and dance a little.
I think that’s what’s going on. A child going through life seeing how his parents are interacting and then getting to the point in his or her own life where they do the same thing with someone they love.
I could be totally wrong on that interpretation. You’ll have to let me know what you think of the song.
It’s got a really cool melody. Something that’s subtle, but I like that. You can listen to the story while the music provides a nice accompaniment.
