Flashback Friday: What Was I Thinkin’

September 2, 2011 by Dayne Shuda Leave a Comment

You’ll remember this one. It’s already been 8 years since Dierks Bentley first came on the country music scene. He was a fresh faced guy with a charming appeal and a great hit song to boot.

Now he’s a country star and I thought since he just had another number one hit – [easyazon-link asin=”B004V5389K”]Am I The Only One[/easyazon-link] – we should flashback to his very first number one single.

What Was I Thinkin’ – Dierks Bentley

The Little White Tank Top Song

Dierks BentleyBack in 2003 Dierks Bentley brought little white tank tops to the mainstream. He was a starstruck guy in the video for his debut single. [easyazon-link asin=”B000SXM3HM”]What Was I Thinkin'[/easyazon-link] really took off like a shot that year. It went straight to number one and I specially remember people askin who was the singer of the song. It’s really a simple story song. It’s a little ridiculous, but totally believable.

The guy heads over to pick up this new girl. He isn’t quite sure what to expect. He thinks it’s going to be just your average date. It turns out to be anything, but… The girl has a thirst for the exciting and really takes Dierks for the ride of his life.

They barely get out of her driveway. They tear away from cops as they high speed chase through the backroads. They hit the bars for some drinkin’ and dancing and all the guy can think about is having a good time. He forgets all about what’ll happen tomorrow.

There is a fight in the bar. Dierks gets knocked to the ground. And this is where the line of the song comes in…any track that mentions ‘hood slidin’ like Bo Duke’ deserves to go down in country music lore. Dierks finally gets the girl back home only to have her dad chase him out of the driveway with a shotgun. It’s a true country romance – a modern day Juliet and Romeo.

Sometimes we just go with our feeling and let our brain do none of the work. The song has a fun story. It’s country. The music – as usual – really puts the song over the edge. It’s fast-paced and that’s what people attach themselves to. It seems almost easier for artists – especially new artists – to write and record ballads. You gotta have something snappy that people like to play over and over.

This was that kind of song and still is today.

People need a release from the ballads once in a while.

Dierks in 2011 and Beyond

After a little experimenting with bluegrass Dierks came back to his fun loving country roots in 2011. His latest single – [easyazon-link asin=”B004V5389K”]Am I The Only One[/easyazon-link] – saw him getting back to the good timing ways and it shot all the way up to number one on the country charts. It’s the first single form Dierks’ upcoming album that is sure to see him back on top of the country world – not that he ever left. I liked Dierks’ bluegrass album.

It was a big risk at the time and still kind of slowed things down a bit, but he’s a talented guy with great ability. He’s back now with another number one and I’m sure the upcoming album will have a few more big hits.

I’ll be checking out Diamonds as soon as it’s available. Will you? Until then I’ll have to keep playing the Dierks Bentley collection…
