Flashback Friday: What’ll You Do About Me

Doug Supernaw was one of the surprise hits of 1993.

That year Doug saw his first album – released on the independent BNA Records – reach gold status for shipping over 500,000 copies around the US. The album sold strong on the heels of the hit singles Reno and I Don’t Call Him Daddy. The tracks took the long tall Texan to the top of the charts and his charisma and stage presence made him a rising star.

When the time came to get the second album released there were personal struggles on and off the stage for Doug. It took until the third single from the sophomore album for Doug to find a hit.

Here is that song – What’ll You Do About Me…

What’ll You Do About Me – Doug Supernaw

Now if you remember things correctly you’ll remember this song as performed by Randy Travis and The Forester Sisters. Even Steve Earle had recorded the song back in the ’80s.

Doug SupernawBut that was one of Doug’s specialities. He had the knack for knowing some great old country songs (see: I Don’t Call Him Daddy) and making them his own. That’s what Doug did with What’ll You Do About Me. The song is rocking and Doug really sounded good on the track.

Every once in a while I’ll go back on YouTube and check out Doug’s performance at the Carolina Opry. It must have been sometime in 1995 when the single was out at radio. Doug opens the set with the song and instantly grabs the attention of the audience. He was a great performer and it makes me sad to think about what he could have become.

Shortly after this song reached the top 20 Doug fell out of grace with those in Nashville. He basically disappeared just a few short years later and today seems to struggles on the backroads of life living in his own world.

I guess that happens sometimes. At least we have the flashbacks of Doug’s brilliance thanks to his great performances like the one above.
