Chances are you probably didn’t know movie star Garrett Hedlund could sing.
Ok that was a cheesy line, but this kid can sing for real. I’m talking about some straight up traditional style country music in the vein of Alan Jackson, Doug Supernaw, and even a little Waylon Jennings.
Sure he’s not on that level, but that’s the kind of country I love the most so the song Garrett does for the new movie Country Strong is my kind of country.
Chances Are is the name of the song and Garrett does a great job on the tune for the movie. It’s a song about a guy about to give into the girl he’s with. It seems like the two might be falling in love, but the guy has a bit of advice for the girl – chances are he’ll continue being the leaving kind of guy he’s always been. He lives life on the edge of good and bad and things may not work out for the two of them, but he’s willing to give it a shot.
This song has its influence in the ’90s traditional country music, which actually had its roots in the ’70s. There is a bit of cowboy in these notes along with some of the heartbreak and good old fashioned love that fill most country songs.
Garrett may seem like the typical Hollywood star. He did just appear in the high budget Tron: Legacy film, but he’s just a country boy from the farm in Minnesota. He spent his childhood running around the farm and doing the work of the country folk. He’s got the roots and it comes through in his voice. He’s authentic.
This is the kind of country music I love and Chances Are has me even more excited to see Country Strong as soon as it comes out.
