Gary Allan has had an interesting career.
He’s had these occasional strong hits throughout his career. It actually dates back nearly 20 years now since the time he had his first top ten hit. Since that time he’s had the pattern of having really huge hits followed by a few modest hits.
After a smash hit he came out with a more modest hit. Now he’s ready for another single. This one has some soul in it.
It Ain’t The Whiskey – Gary Allan
I can’t think of anyone else in country that could nail this song like Gary Allan. The man knows how to pick great songs to record. He understands who he is and he’s really the only voice that could pull this one off today.
The song has some familiar images like the girl that’s driving a guy crazy along with the whiskey and the other things in life that can run a person down.
That would be a tough song for a modern artist to sell because it’s been done so many times before.
But the beauty in this song is in the delivery from Allan. He puts the right kind of emotion in the vocals. You can feel that familiar gravel in his throat. It sounds like he’s been drinking whiskey and smoking cigarettes for years.
That’s not a good thing, but it makes for some good songs.
