For the most part Jake did not have top country music during 2010. He certainly hasn’t been forgotten by his passionate fanbase though. He toured throughout the year. I was able to see him perform at a country festival in Western Wisconsin in July. He put on a great show and debuted some new tunes. The crowd received him well and seemed to like the new songs.
The question heading into 2011 for Jake will be how much of an impact will new music have if he’s able to record and release a new single. It appears Jake is still on the RCA roster and hopefully he’s taking some time to get some good stuff recorded and out for the fans.
Jake Owen in 2011
When an artist spends a bit of time off from the charts it can be difficult for them to comeback strong and reclaim their momentum.
A recent success story for an artist was Billy Currington. He spent some time away from music for personal reasons. He was off the charts for a bit, but came back stronger than ever. Billy hasn’t looked back and was able to actually breakout to a new level of success.
Jake has had a similar career path to Currington’s before Currington broke out. Will Jake be able to come back and do the same? I think so. His vocals are strong and he seems to have a strong work ethic. In interviews he seems driven, passionate, and full of energy. It shows in his music too.
Recent News Items
Jake recently made headlines for a charity concert he held in his home state of Florida. The concert raised money tens of thousands of dollars for a few of Jake’s preferred charities.
Jake is busy even in the off season of country music. He’s still touring out on his own and giving back to those less fortunate. This is a great way to see what kind of person Jake is. In concert and in his interviews he seems like a caring person willing to give his time and effort to others. Those are the kinds of people that succeed in life no matter what they choose to do.
Jake has also been busy pioneering the way fans can watch his live shows.
I missed the show, but it’s a great idea to stream your show live and allow fans to chat with each other as they watch their favorite artist perform. If you participated in the show and chat let me know how it was.
I’m sure there have been other acts doing this, but this is the first I’ve heard of such an event. It’s pretty cool to see an artist experiment with new ways of bringing his music to the fans. As the existing music business model fades out artists will need to find new ways to make money doing what they love. The live show is something that can’t be copied – like a digital sound recording. I think that’s where the artists will find their success. Jake appears to have the right focus in this regard.
During the show Jake even showed off his tattoos and jeans for his fans. How awesome is that? He was chatting and answering questions for fans. Great interaction that only endears his fans to him and his music more.
The Need for Hits
What seems to drive every artist’s career is a continuous stream of hits. Hit songs are the lifeblood of artists. Songs need to get played on the radio, on TV shows, in movies, and throughout the internet.
The more people listening to an artist’s songs the larger the fanbase will grow and the more people will attend the artist’s live shows. The way it worked in the past was for artists to give some benefit to record companies in exchange for exposure and hit records. The artists created the hits, but in order to have them heard they needed a record label to market the song and the artist. As payment the labels sold records – a way for fans to hear the music anytime they wanted.
Nowadays artists are looking for new ways to promote their music. Record companies aren’t making as much from selling a way to listen to music so they’re efforts seem to be dwindling. Artists are working with marketing agencies to find hits.
Hit singles always come back to the songs themselves though. And Jake Owen needs a hit heading into 2011. I haven’t heard of anything on the horizon, but Jake is a smart guy and he knows he needs something special for his fans in 2011. If he wants to take his career to the next level – from newcomer with a handful of hits to star he’s going to need to keep things consistently excellent. I can’t imagine the work it takes to keep the hits coming out, but that’s what it appears an artist needs to maintain a career.
Jason Aldean was in a similar situation to Jake Owen just a couple years ago. Aldean was heading into his third album. He’d racked up a few hits with his first two records, but hadn’t yet reached star status. Next came some smash hit records and now Aldean is arguably the biggest male artist in country music.
Can Jake make that transition in 2011?
He’s got the talent. He’s got the work ethic. We’ll have to see if he can put it all together for some smash hits in 2011. Hopefully when we look ahead to 2012 we’ll be wondering if Jake Owen can continue his rise to the top.
