The name Jana Kramer might not mean anything to you.
There is a buzz building, though, and by the end of 2012 you might recognize her as one of the brighest stars in country music. Her debut single is just cracking the top 25 on the charts. She has a great voice and appears to really be stumbling on to something with her music career.
It will be interesting to see how Jana’s career plays out over the next year or so.
Jana Kramer: The Next Faith Hill
It’s almost unfair to make this comparison, but I really think Jana Kramer could have a huge career. She reminds me of Faith Hill.
When Faith first came out she had these songs that were just full of great melodies and interesting topics. Songs like Wild One and Take Me Ask I Am were huge hits. Heck, they are still hits today by most standards. I hear them and her other songs from the era all the time.
Now, Jana is only on her first single although she has released some promotional singles in the past few months. It’s a great song, though, and it really shows potential for her career.
Why Ya Wanna is the classic example of a country song that has just a little bit of pop in it. The song reminds me of those early Faith records. This particular one isn’t as upbeat, but the voice is there with Jana and I could really see her pulling off some great songs on her debut record.
I should also point out at this point that Faith Hill is truly one of a kind. She’s one of the greatest artists in country history and there is no replacing her. Comparing new artists to past artists is simply something people do so they can better understand if they should like a new artist.
Before this year when Jana entered the charts for the first time, she was a pretty well known actor. My first and really only introduction to her was on the show One Tree Hill. It was a surprise when I found out she was becoming a country artist with a hit record. Her character on the show was kind of a trouble maker and it’s always hard to get those characters out of your mind when you’re considering the actual person. I’m not sure why that is.
Anyway, it seems like Why Ya Wanna should be able to crack the top ten on the charts and I’m thinking it has a shot at #1. There are some great female artists to compete with these days including Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood. It’s not going to be easy, but I think Jana has a different quality about her that makes her unique.
Maybe a better comparison for Jana would be Deana Carter. In 1996, Deana emerged with some huge hits even though Shania and Faith were ruling the charts. Deana had a different quality about her. She was organic and sounded really country and rural. It was good stuff.
Jana kind of fits that role a little bit compared to the others. It’s weird because Jana comes from the Hollywood world.
Jana’s voice also reminds me of Cyndi Thomson. You might remember her from around 2001 and 2002 when she had a few great songs including the #1 What I Really Meant To Say. She was a star in the making, but then took some time away from the business. Gary Allan did have a big record with a song co-written by Cindi, Life Ain’t Always Beautiful. And Cyndi is back recording again today even releasing This Time just a couple years ago.
Jana Kramer could turn into any one of these stars including Faith Hill.
Or perhaps we’ll be comparing future artists to Jana Kramer. That’s probably the best approach to take.
Jana Kramer will be the next Jana Kramer.
She’s off to a great start.
