Another Aussie invasion?
Country music has danced with Australia before. It was Keith Urban that brought his Southern Hemisphere twang to the mainstream US country at the turn of the century and it seems others have finally followed his lead.
The other day I was listening to the new country music station while chipping golf balls in the back yard and a song stuck out. It’s usually difficult for new music to break me of the golfing zone, but this song sounded way different than the others.
It turns out the song was Serves You Right and the band Jetty Road…from Australia.
Listen to Serves You Right…
Serves You Right by Jetty Road
What do you think?
There seems to be an influx of pop-country songs lately in country music. I’m fine with the trend. There was a big traditionalist phase back in the early ’90s and that gave way to a pop influence in country during the ’00s. There was a little drift back to the traditional for the past couple years I think, but now I’m really starting to hear more and more pop.
Jetty Road fits that description.
It doesn’t really matter to me much what people define a certain song or band as in country music. Traditional or pop I really only care about the song from a point of good and bad.
And if we’re judging songs based on the good or bad designation I’d say Serves You Right from Jetty Road is a good country song. The song is about a a boy and girl. The boy left the girl long ago for another. Now his new woman has left him in the dust and he is coming crawling back to his old flame.
Well it serves this jerk right for thinking he can just have everything back the way it was. Times have changed and karma is hitting him hard. He made his choices and now he’s dealing with a hard dose of reality.
It sounds like a song for the powerful women out there.
I think we’ll be hearing more from Jetty Road in 2011.
After successful albums in their home country it looks like their next set will be successful worldwide.
Watch out country music. It could be another Aussie Invasion.
