This was an interesting choice.
Kenny Chesney and Tim McGraw debuted their new duet single on the ACM Awards last week. This was a unique opportunity for two superstars to release a single that was actually a duet. This chance doesn’t come around much in the country world. The politics of the labels makes it nearly impossible for artists, even friends, on different labels to release singles together. The only time is usually happens is when one of the artists involved leaves a record label. This happened with Blake Shelton and Trace Adkins (Hillbilly Bone) after Trace left Capitol. It also happened after Alan Jackson left Arista and was able to work with the Zac Brown Band.
Both Tim and Kenny were able to pull off the feat with their buddy Tracy Lawrence when the trio took the single Find Out Who Your Friends Are to number one. That incident wasn’t without issue, though. The version with all three was never supposed to be a single and Kenny’s label initially put a cease and desist on the record until they realized that the single was actually a good move.
So Kenny and Tim had a great opportunity to take advantage of Tim leaving Curb. The two superstars are heading out on tour this year and they’ll be playing this new single.
The bad part?
The song isn’t that good.
Feel Like A Rockstar – Kenny Chesney & Tim McGraw
Feel Like A Rockstar sounds like a song a new artist would release. There are cliches everywhere. The rockstar thing has recently been used and it just seems like the topic needs a rest right now.
I get that Kenny and Tim are rockstars. They are two of my favorite artists. And Kenny’s career has been about taking off on the weekends to forget the work week. It’s a great angle that’s always worked well for the rock world and Kenny does it well with songs like Reality and Live A Little.
This one just misses the mark. The song’s lone hook is the title line. It’s catchy. I’m sure people will be singing along with this one all summer as the duo makes their way across the US. The stadium tour is sure to be something special this year.
I just wish they could have chosen a better song for the duet. The situation was prime for a great track and I feel like they went for the easy hit. There wasn’t even the slightest bit of risk taking with this track. Maybe that was the point.
It’s a pretty good song that should become a top five hit. I don’t think it will be a memorable hit for either artist. Granted, each has laid down a great collection of hits as the standard so it’s tough to outdue themselves.
Find Out Who Your Friends Are is a great track. Something like that could have been cool. Even something more like Reality would have been great.
I’m probably missing the mark here on this one. I try not to criticize songs here on CML, but here we are. The performance came off as flat to me on the awards show. Maybe my expectations were too high. I’ve said before here on the site that sometimes the songs shouldn’t be taken too seriously.
Maybe that’s the case with Feel Like A Rockstar.
What do you think?
