Cody Johnson

The other side of the breakup.

I was listening to the podcast, Children Of Song, with Robert K. Oermann and one of the episodes had Cody Johnson and Gary Allan on.

Gary has been one of my favorites for a long time. He had a great run there in the early 2000s. Not many were bigger at the time.

And Cody is one of my new favorites. One of those independent guys that has worked hard to slowly make his mark making his kind of music.

His current single is touching the radio charts. But we already talked about Wild As You a couple years ago. So we’ll just look at one of the other great songs off his latest album.

Kiss Goodbye – Cody Johnson

This is a sad song right here. I like the talking parts. That’s definitely some old school style right there. And if you know Cody you know he loves the traditional side of country music.

What’s going on in this song, at least to my ear, is that a guy knows that he has to break it off with a girl. Something has been going on. He knows it’s best for the situation. He’s on his way over to tell her. It’s really breaking his heart. He assumes she’s going to be pretty sad. Maybe not seeing it coming.

The next kiss will be that kiss goodbye as they part ways.

That’s an interesting perspective for a song. You don’t always get this side of the breakup in a country song, but it comes across well.

What do you think of this one from Cody Johnson?
