I listen to a lot of country music…a lot.
It probably drives my fiancee crazy, but I think she comes around to the songs I play over and over.
Just the other day I heard a new song. There are a lot of songs that don’t stand out on the radio. They just kind of blend into the background as I’m working, but this one song caught my attention and now I’ve been playing it over and over.
Me And My Kind – Cody Johnson
I’ve mentioned before that my favorite era of country music was the early and mid 1990s. That was the era when I was growing up. You’ve got all kinds of great artists like Alan Jackson, Pam Tillis, John Michael Montgomery, Tracy Byrd and countless others. It was salad days in country music back the.
When I heard Me And My Kind from Cody Johnson it made me think of that era in country music. Back then this would have been the perfect song for a hat act like Tracy Byrd, Mark Chesnutt or maybe someone like John Anderson.
This is getting back to cowboy country, which we don’t get a lot of these days. There are no real songs about rodeos and ranches today. So it’s good to hear one and one that’s an incredible song no matter the style.
You have the story of a guy who’s girl is over him and he realizes it’s over. She couldn’t handle the guy he was – a cowboy. That’s a cool part of the song, but the best part is the melody. It’ll grab you in the first listen and you’ll be singing along with the chorus by the end.
I know it caught me and I’ve been singing it every since.
What do you think?
