Over You by Miranda Lambert

It’s time for new Miranda Lambert music.

Miranda Lambert

The next single from For The Record is Over You. I think it’s a great choice. The first time hearing the song I actually misinterpreted the lyrics. Thanks to one of the great readers at CML I was corrected and now have a whole new understanding of the song. Check out Over You and see what you think.

Over You – Miranda Lambert

Miranda has really made her career on two kinds of songs:

  1. In your face, I’m gonna kick your ass songs
  2. Slow, emotional songs about life, love, and all the crazy stuff we go through

Over You falls into the second category. It’s a song about the loss of a loved one. I was corrected in the linked article above. At first I thought the song was about losing a lover; someone you cared deeply for and lost over a death or a heartbreak. This seemed like the most likely scenario, but I was wrong.

A smart Country Music Life reader corrected me as they figured out the song was about Blake’s brother. Blake and Miranda co-wrote this track. If I’m not mistaken (again) this is the first time Miranda and Blake have had one of there co-writes on the charts. They have recorded songs together before from their collection of co-writes, but never has one been released until Over You.

Thanks to Marie I was forced to look closer at the lyrics of the song. The presents under the tree and memories of being kids makes the song undoubtedly about losing a sibling. It’s a sad song about losing someone.

There are really two levels to this track. There is the personal level for Blake as he remembers the loss of his brother in a car crash. I’m sure it will be difficult for Blake to hear the song on the radio, but maybe it will be a bit more therapy. I can’t imagine losing someone as close as a brother or sister.

For an even deeper level, I think people that have lost someone in their lives will connect with Over You. People that have lost grandparents, parents, siblings, and other loved ones will be able to realize they’re not alone in their loss. People unfortunately lose people in life. It’s the only thing that’s guaranteed. It helps knowing that others go through the same emotions.

That’s the power of a song – connection. And Miranda does a great job with her vocals and treatments on this song. It’s incredible. I think the track will become a huge hit for her and probably reach the top 3 with an outside chance at the number one spot.

Could you imagine turning on the country awards next fall and seeing Blake and Miranda on stage at the same time accepting the award for Song of the Year?

I think it’s a possibility.

That’s what I think of Over You.

What are your thoughts?

Will this become one of the greatest country songs of all time? It’s it another huge hit for Ran?

Chart Estimate: #3

CML Points: 85/100
