Eric Church continues to mix things up with his career. I thought he was coming out with a new single from his previous album, but it seems like things came together pretty quick with new material.
And Eric surprised his fan club by sending them the first copies of the music a couple days before allowing fans to get access in other ways. I thought that was pretty cool.
Here is the song that came out first and it’s also the title track.
Mr. Misunderstood – Eric Church
I first heard the song on the CMAs. I wasn’t sure if it was Eric talking specifically about himself or what. It seems like that’s where much of it comes from and that he’s almost looking back at his younger self assuring that kid that things will work out all right if he is true to himself.
That seems to be the theme of the song: embracing who you are. We go through some interesting stages in life and one is when we’re young and in school. There is so much pressure to fit. And that continues throughout life, but it’s really the ones that are different that make big differences.
They’re ridiculed at times because they’re different and like the song says people don’t really understand what those people are doing and why they’re different.
Eric has touched on this theme before especially with the rocking The Outsiders single off the last album of the same name.
But I like this approach. It’s pretty stripped down on the production and almost has that folk sound to it; something like American Pie in a little way. Certainly different, but inspired by that style and in a good way.
I can see kids all over that are on the outside playing this one as they perfect their guitar skills.
