This one has many layers it seems. I love it.
It’s been three years since we wrote about Taylor Swift here on Country Music Life. And that was about her new song, Blank Space, which was a single off her latest album. The song didn’t chart on the country charts. It was Swift’s big entrance into the pop world. And man did she take over the pop world.
Taylor released a new album this year. It was seemingly a continuance of her pop career, but a little unexpectedly her team put out a single for the country charts. And they’re really pushing it hard. The song isn’t necessarily a country song, but it does have a great Taylor Swift sound.
Check it out.
New Year’s Day – Taylor Swift
There are a lot of layers to Taylor Swift. I think she’s one of the best. One of the best in country music. One of the best in music…period. She reminds me a bit of Garth Brooks. Very thoughtful in how she lives her life.
One thing I notice about this song is that it’s the final song on the album. Garth used to say that the final song on his albums were always his favorites or at least the most meaningful to him.
I have to think there is a reason that Taylor put this song as the last one on the record. It’s about the end of a party on New Year’s Eve. The lyrics are a bit vague. Probably on purpose, but it seems to be a person that is longing for meaningful relationships. Maybe with a mate. Maybe with family. I don’t think that part matters.
Or maybe it’s a song about the appreciation for long relationships. Taylor sang the song on Jimmy Fallon’s show shortly after the passing of his mother. One of the lyrics in the song is about squeezing hands three times. And Jimmy shared that he used to do that with his mom when he was a child. It’s probably serendipity and it’s pretty neat.
Anyway, I see this song eventually reaching #1 on the country charts. Taylor dipped her toe back into the genre with Better Man. The country world loves her, supports her and it’s great to have this song in our world.
Chart Estimate: #1
CML Points: 92/100
