It’s been 13 years now since Phil Vassar started out with a gold record the first time out. He was signed to the big leagues after years of performing at his own club and writing huge hit songs for other artists like Jo Dee Messina, Alan Jackson and Tim McGraw.
I still remember sitting at home every morning, waiting for the bus to school and watch Carlene on CMT. It was a huge hit. It kind of helped to usher in a new era of style in country music.
That first Phil Vassar record is one I owned on CD. I still listen to it digitally now. Some great songs.
Since that time Phil has released tons of hits, but after a good run with the major labels he went off on his own. At least I think he owns the label that releases his music now, but I’m not entirely sure.
Anyway, for the last three years Phil has followed a new formula for success. He releases one single each year with no accompanying album. The singles reach up into the Top 40 on the charts and keep Phil out there with the fans.
This year’s single is Love Is Alive. It’s another good one.
Love Is Alive – Phil Vassar
Listen: Love Is Alive by Phil Vassar
By now there is no doubt that Phil Vassar knows how to write and perform a catchy country song. This one is no different. It’s a simple story about two people in love, but the melodies and the hooks are there. It’s catchy. It’s the kind of love song that says all the things you want to say to the one you love.
I see this song perhaps cracking the top 30 on the charts, which would be the first time that’s happened for Phil since 2008.
It’s a great song that still hits home with country fans even after all these years. Phil is one of the best and still one of my favorites. I’ll always root for him to have hits.
