Are we in trouble now?
You probably haven’t heard the phrase before on country radio. Randy Travis had a hit with the track Are We In Trouble Now back in 1996. It was at the end of Randy’s early career with Warner Bros. It had marked ten years of one of the most successful relationships in country music history. Randy Travis ushered in a new traditional era in country.
Last week I watched the movie Rumor Has It on TV. It stars Kevin Costner and Jennifer Aniston. It’s kind of a sweet movie. I had seen it before and I guess I enjoy it because I watched it again while reading the news on my computer with my morning coffee. I remembered the movie most for this one scene where Kevin Costner and Jennifer Aniston are in a little bar somewhere in San Francisco. Costner heads over to the jukebox, puts on a song and starts dancing with Aniston. The song on the jukebox is Are We In Trouble Now.
It was so cool to 1) hear a Randy Travis song in a movie setting this way and 2) to learn about an RT track I hadn’t heard before. It turns out the producer or who ever was in charge of the movie knew their country music or maybe it was actually Costner because the song was a hit in 1996 and was probably actually on a few country bar jukeboxes back then. The song only reached #24 on the charts so it’s not one of Randy’s more well known songs.
Are We In Trouble Now was perfect for the setting. Costner and Aniston’s characters were about to enter into a one night love affair – a perfect fit for the song’s theme.
I’m glad when I’m able to discover old country music songs especially in the most unlikely places. Beyond being in the movie, this is a great song on its own. It’s got a slow, but cool groove with Randy’s easy going deep vocals in the forefront.
A great traditional song used perfectly in a good Hollywood movie.
