Clear As Day by Scotty McCreery

With two top 20 hits on the charts and a platinum album, Scotty McCreery has already had a big breakthrough in country music.

Things can get even bigger for a new country artist, though, and that could be just what happens with Scotty’s third single. Listen to Clear As Day, the title track from Scotty’s debut album and see what you think.

Will this be a huge breakthrough?

Clear As Day – Scotty McCreery

It’s hard to predict how a country song will do for a new artist. But sometimes you listen to a song and even on the first listen you realize it’s something special.

I try to listen to a song for the first time when I write down my thoughts. As I write this review it’s only minutes since I first heard Clear As Day. The song has the potential to be something special and could be the biggest hit of Scotty’s career up to this point.

The track is about a high school love. The narrator plays on the team (I’m guessing football team) for the high school. The girl is his flame. They’re hanging out together after the big game. They head over to the local hangout for a post-game party. There is a good time had by all. The couple makes out a little on the porch and their love is running wild. It’s what happens in high school and most people can relate.

Then the girl heads off for home, but never makes it. The result is a car accident. You have to use your imagination to fill in the blanks, but that’s what seems to happen at the end of the song. It’s sad. It’s emotional especially if you’ve had something similar happen in your life.

I see this track being received in two ways.

First, some people will say this is a song that’s trying too hard to be something.

Second, the song is something special and will connect with quite a few people.

I lean toward the song being special. Country music, to me, is about telling stories. This is a story song. Unfortunately, this is a story that has happened to many people out there listening to country radio.

Bad things do happen in life and one way to get through them is to realize that nobody is really alone in the world. If a song can make your realize that it becomes and important song.

I think Clear As Day will be an important country song.

What do you think?

Chart Estimate: #5

CML Points: 81/100
