He’s still as good as ever.
Last week I discovered the Hyper Caroline Hobby podcast. I was way late to the game on that one, but I binged on about ten or so episodes. One of them was with John Berry.
I loved John Berry’s hits in the ’90s. I could still rock out to Standing On The Edge Of Goodbye on repeat all day at work.
Anyway, last year John put out a new independent album. We looked at one of the songs from that one, but in the podcast interview John mentioned another one.
So I thought we could check that one out today.
She Don’t Need Me – John Berry
How good does John still sound? He nails this song. It’s the perfect type of song for him. Although the more I think of it he really could sing just about any type of country song. But he was always really good at these ballads.
This one is about the love a guy has for a woman. But it’s a little different. The thing that this guy appreciates the most about her is the fact that she doesn’t need him. She is good on her own. But she still chose to be with him, but that makes him feel even better. She didn’t have to choose him.
John talked in the interview that he would like to give things one more go with the country mainstream. But he also talked about liking his independence.
It sounded like there are tradeoffs with Nashville. Give a little. Get a little.
It would be cool to see what could happen if John teamed up with a place like Nash Icon.
I don’t know. We’ll see what happens, but in the meantime we have great music like this to enjoy.

In my opinion, John Berry ‘nails’ every song he sings (that’s why my husband and I have followed JB since 1989). Have you ever heard him sing the phone book? LOL Seriously
Love, love, love John Berry !! His voice is incredible. My daughter and I are big fans and we have been to 40 of his shows — so far — hoping for many more in the future.
