The first time I heard From A Table Away
it instantly made me stop typing away at my computer and listen more attentively.
I thought it was a new or old Dixie Chicks song or perhaps a new one from the Court Yard Hounds. Then I thought maybe it was a return song from Julie Roberts. It turned out the song was from relative newcomer Sunny Sweeney. It was refreshing to hear this kind of music on the radio.
Sunny Sweeney has a pure country voice. Her delivery is a little raspy, a little broken, and full of emotion. The despair and loneliness come through every note as she sings about seeing her lover with another woman at a local restaurant.
From A Table Away – Sunny Sweeney
The song is about a woman sitting at a restaurant table and seeing her lover in the same restaurant with another woman. It turns out the other woman is actually the guy’s wife or ex-wife. The narrator appears to be the ‘other’ woman in this instance that filled the void in the guy’s life for a time.
It has to be tough to find yourself in this situation. The emotion of confusion, heartbreak, and disappointment come through every word Sunny Sweeney sings.
From A Table Away is a great sad country song. It’s hard to pick a side when there is a complex issue involved. The relationship of a man, his former lover and his new lover can get complicated for all parties. Do we blame the man for seeking love after his first relationship falters? Do we blame the man for wanting to go back to the woman he loves? Do we blame the new woman for being a supposed home wrecker? Do we blame the wife for possibly neglecting the man?
It’s hard to know who to blame and in the end it doesn’t matter. Sometimes things just don’t work out and everybody tries to make the best decisions.
Sunny Sweeney seems to have a hit on her hands with From A Table Away and the reason is the song’s honesty and emotion. Classic country songs come from the heart and this tune is definitely from the heart.
