This song will catch you by surprise when you pay attention to the lyrics. I wasn’t sure what I was hearing at first, but after listening a couple times and reading through the lyrics it really caught me off guard.
Don Henley has been one of the best songwriters of the last several decades. He’s most well known as a member of what is probably the greatest American rock band, the Eagles, but he’s also had a hell of a solo career.
Here is a new single from his most recent solo record.
Take A Picture Of This – Don Henley
The song starts out as a nice reflection on life. The lyrics are pretty straight to the point. The narrator is looking back on life with the person he cared about most in a very fond way.
They start out as kids falling in love. Life is carefree and good. Then they move into the stage of life when they raise a family and get those children off into the world on their own.
That’s when things take a turn. You learn that the couple realizes they’re not meant to be together anymore. They’re moving on and there seems to be some resentment in the words. It doesn’t seem to be a cordial separation, which I’m not sure there really is such a thing.
The Eagles have always had these kinds of songs throughout their career. And Henley being one of the main songwriters you have to think he was always a main driver of that misdirection.
This song is kind of like that, but it’s also pretty straightforward.
It’s sad by the end, but life is sad sometimes.
It really doesn’t get more country than this. Real life.
