Normally on Thursday we look at a new song that an artist has out from the previous week and look back at one of their previous hits. But sometimes I just hear a song on the radio from a few years ago and I think it’s worth putting up here on the site.
That’s the case with today’s throwback song.
Joe Diffie is one of the legends in country music. He had a huge string of hits on the radio starting all the way back in 1990. And he recently came back into the picture with the song 1994 made famous by Jason Aldean. But Joe never really left the scene if you were paying attention. He’s been out there on the road every year and he released a really great bluegrass album just a few years ago.
And in response to 1994 he put out a song with the Jawga Boyz. That brought Joe Diffie into the Hick Hop scene, but country fans recognized that great voice on the chorus. It was a thing of beauty.
The song I heard this past weekend was Bigger Than The Beatles. It was a #1 for Joe back in late 1995 and early 1996. That’s nearly 20 years ago, but this song still gets played fairly often on radio. It’s a pretty simple concept. The hook plays on the fact that John Lennon said The Beatles were bigger than Jesus. I don’t know the details, but Joe made it a song about a love that was bigger than The Beatles.
He added a great melody and a hit was born.
And it’s still as great today as it was back in 1995.
I hope you enjoy it.
