In 2008, Hootie And The Blowfish really hadn’t had a hit record in a few years. Darius was probably best known in recent times for dressing up like a hokey cowboy for a Burger King commercial. A life of touring with Hootie while playing charity golf tournaments with celebrities was in store. And that probably would have been a really good life all things considered.
But then Darius Rucker made his push into country music. I can’t really think of someone that would have more odds stacked against them heading into a venture. But if you think about it, Darius actually had a lot going for him. He knew how to write catchy songs. He came from the garage band and pop world, but good music is good music. With the right production he certainly could make country music.
And Darius is from South Carolina. There is plenty of country music influence there. But people were definitely curious when the first single Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It came out. I remember that it slowly started getting more and more radio play over that summer. Eventually it reached number one on the charts. Then everybody kind of looked around and though, “Whoa, Darius Rucker of Hootie And The Blowfish is now a legitimate country singer and rising star.”
It’s been 6+ years since that song came out. Darius is on his fourth country record and he’s had numerous big hits. I don’t think it’s going to slow down anytime soon, but it all started with that first hit.
