A little risky having your first single with the word “goodbye”, but it worked out well for Blackhawk.
Back in 1993 one of country’s greatest bands released their first single. The song peaked at #11 on the charts and the band went on a solid run through the ’90s making some of the biggest hits on radio at the time.
But it all started with the first song, Goodbye Says It All.
The band was Blackhawk.
Their first album was released later in 1995 and sold two million copies. It might have even sold more. The second album came out in 1995 and sold another one million copies.
Looking back I don’t think Blackhawk gets the credit they deserve. You can’t really listen to a country station for a few days without hearing one of their hits. And it’s usually Goodbye Says It All. The song was really catchy. It wasn’t all that much of an uptempo song, but the words really got stuck in your head.
It was about a guy that comes home late after a night of having a little too much fun to find out that his girl has left him. Everything is packed up and she’s gone, but she writes “Goodbye” on the wall and that really is all she had to say for him to get the message. It’s too late.
I don’t have the official numbers, but this had to be one of the most-played songs of the ’90s in country music. I’ve heard this song so much over the years and I’m sure you have too. It’s played on mainstream stations today and probably daily on classic country stations.
A great song. A great band. And their album cover on the Greatest Hits record was pretty cool.
