I’m fairly certain that if you were alive in 1996 and 1997 that you heard this song. It was a HUGE from a first-time artist, Jo Dee Messina. She had a big voice and an even bigger personality. She become one of the new sweethearts in country music and after the success of this song it seemed like Jo Dee was destined for stardom and she was.
Heads Carolina Tails California – Jo Dee Messina
The song about leaving it all behind and getting away hit a chord with everybody. There is something magical about being able to leave it all where it is and just let the wind take you. Most of us never do it, but to escape from the real world for a few minutes is something most of us dream about.
This song was everywhere when it came out. You could drive for 20 minutes in the truck without hearing it. I remember hearing it all the time while riding in the car with my folks.
Jo Dee seemed destined for stardom when this thing hit. The followup single did pretty well, but the next two didn’t and Jo Dee had to fight to find success on her second record and that thing really took off (with the help of some great songs from Phil Vassar). So Jo Dee became a star and she’s still alive and kicking today with some great new music.
She’s always been one of my favorites and it dates all the way back to the day when this song was released. It’s still played often on country radio and for good reason – people love it.
