The Curious Case of Jake Owen

Jake Owen is climbing the charts again with his new single Tell Me. This is another great song from Jake. He’s been a little hit and miss with his singles so far in his short career.

Jake tells The Boot that he thinks he could play a few of Johnny Depp’s characters. The cool ones. Jake Owen acting? I guess it makes sense. He has had to act in front of the camera for the new video for Tell Me.

For now though Jake is trying to do his best to build on a solid collection of country hits. He is one of the hottest country singers in the business today. His stock is rising with each single. Tell Me is the third single off his second album Easy Does It. The songs Jake has cut up to this point have been a mixture of simple, fun songs for guys, the usual songs about women, and his second biggest hit Startin’ With Me is about self reflection. It’s a solid collection, but I think fans are still trying to figure out just who Jake Owen is. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Often, artists are given a definition based on their first big hit. Artists that take merit with their self definition can milk the formula for quite a few years. Some mix in some new forms of music as a way to expand their creative range while expanding their audience. This effort is often confused with “selling out”.

I think for Jake Owen – he’s putting together a collection of songs that will continue to expand his audience. I’ll admit that his last single Eight Second Ride was not my favorite. It’s not that I hated it. The song has its place on country radio and just missed the top ten. The song just wasn’t for me. I liked Startin’ With Me. I liked Don’t Think I Can’t Love You. And now I’m really liking Tell Me.

Jake’s new single Tell Me continues to show the range of talent Jake Owen has. He is blessed with a great country voice. His vocals are unique and genuine country. The song Tell Me broadens Owen’s range. The song has a Bob Segar feel to it. I hope Tell Me has a successful run on the country charts.

Jake Owen is a curious case thus far in his career. Fans and critics aren’t able to define exactly what his music is all about. He threw out another curve ball with Tell Me.

I look forward to new music from Jake. I hope he continues releasing music that connects with his current fans while building on the variety he’s already becoming known for…maybe that it’s – Jake Owen can be defined as the chameleon of country music.
