A few years ago Jamey Johnson released a cover album of Hank Cochran songs. It was a really good album. There was one single released, but I don’t think it charted on any of the radio charts or anything. I do think the album sold well, which has been the case with Jamey throughout his career. He’s become a favorite. But today we’re looking back at one of the cuts from that record.
This Ain’t My First Rodeo – Jamey Johnson
You might remember this song. It was a hit for Vern Gosdin and Vern was actually a co-writer on the track with Hank and Max D. Barnes. This song still gets played quite a bit on the classic country stations.
I was surprised to see that the song only reached #14 on the charts. There are just some songs that get better with age, but I can’t imagine this one didn’t sound anything, but good back in 1990.
And I love Jamey’s version. He has a little bit of old Vern in his voice and you don’t get that too much anymore on modern country radio. That’s probably why this song wasn’t play more, but it’s a good one.
And you throw in Lee Ann Womack’s voice and you have a modern day country song.
I love these tribute albums. They kind of put a new twist on some favorites and you even get to discover some songs you may have missed the first time around.
I hope you enjoyed this walk down memory lane for a great album cut in country history.
