In life the only thing we really have is time.
It’s already been 15 years, but back in 1996 Tracy Lawrence released one of his best tracks. Time Marches On
was the title track to Lawrence’s album that year and it really came across on the radio as something unique. The easy paced beat of the music and the story telling in the lyrics captured the attention of country fans.
I can’t quite put my finger on what exactly it is, but the beat of this song kind of puts you in a trance…in a good way. The music just kind of rolls along as Tracy sings the story about a family going through life, experiencing the different things along the way, and ultimately dealing with the changes.
I was introduced to Time Marches On indirectly by my dad. I remember he had this little Nissan Sentra he used for commuting back and forth to his job. The car had a cassette player and one of the 5 cassettes in the car was Time Marches on
. I loved heading places in that car. The tape was always in the cassette deck and I loved the title track.
Even today I can listen to Time Marches On over and over. Actually I can listen to Tracy Lawrence over and over, but this song has a special place in my memory for the simple memory I have of that Nissan Sentra and that cassette. It’s weird how songs can become part of our lives in that way. I’m not sure exactly why it happens like that, but I’m glad it does.
What country songs have that extra meaning for you?
