When I Get My Wings – Will Hoge

If this is your first taste of Will Hoge you should be left with some satisfied country ears. When I Get My Wings has a little rock edge. It reminds me of the rock-pop music that was hugely popular in the ’90s. Will was in a band in the ’90s and has been touring as a solo artist almost continuously since that time. I’m not sure if he played ’90s rock back then, but there is definitely some influence there. It’s like he was raised on bands like Foo Fighters and even some Counting Crows.

Back to the song – When I Get My Wings. There’s a man in the video. His woman is gone. It seems like she’s passed on. He can’t stop thinking about her. He’s questioning the bottle and he’s turning to his bible to see where he should go. He’s waiting for his turn to get the wings and fly on up to see his love again.

Death as always had a place in country music. And I guess in the case of Will Hoge it’s got a place in rock country as well. This video and song are really unique. The topic of death is something everyone is a part of. Nobody can ignore what happens when people die especially when it’s someone close to you. When the situation hurts the only thing you can do is keep on living until your turn comes. And each of our turns are coming at some point. We can’t run and we can’t hide from it.

I don’t know what it is about this song, but there is something here I think people will like. Even with all the rock influence in country right now I think When I Get My Wings is really unique. I think people from my generation that grew up in the ’90s will find something to like here. And I think country fans willing to open their tastes to something new they might like this song as well.

Will Hoge hasn’t had a huge hit with the mainstream country audience at this point. He’s been hugely popular with his core of fans. They’ve allowed him to tour relentlessly over the past few years and his songs are really popular with those fans. I’m sure this song is one of the biggest of his career and I think it could breakthrough on the charts and maybe make the top 50 especially with a little help from CMT.

I’m loving this song right now and I have to say I’m a fan of Will Hoge. It takes something unique and original to get an artist noticed sometimes. There is no doubt Will Hoge is an original and he’s bringing something new to country music.

It’s great.
